Pet Grooming Products

Pet grooming products such as shampoos, conditioners, new combs and brushes, sweet smelling sprays will make your pet luscious. Clipper and trimmers will make your pet sing. These are a few of my favorite things. Don't mind me, I am in Sound of Music mode. I could probably write a second verse with the all of the products available to groom your pets.

Grooming supplies are huge sellers, not just to groomers. Those of us who attempt to keep our pets looking nice will buy anything that works or promises to work. There are as many different combs and brushes as there are types of haircoats. There are soft brushes, wire brushes, fine combs, wide tooth combs, and an endless supply of tools to demat your pet's hair. I am a big fan of the "Furminator." Doesn't that sound intimidating? It looks like a big clipper blade on a rubber handle and for those of us with a perpetually shedding dog, this works wonders. My dog has a soft downy undercoat that leaves little puffs of hair floating like tumbleweeds all over the house. When he is regularly combed with the furminator, there is so much less hair. I love it.

There are also lots of shampoos. There are hypoallergenic types, usually oatmeal based for the very sensitive pet. Of course there are the flea shampoos. Flea shampoos will often kill the fleas that are on your pet at the time. Some of them just stun the fleas. We have all probably seen the miraculously resurrected fleas start to hop when we have presumed they are dead. Once your pet is dry, use a flea preparation designed to keep him flea free. Shampoos do not work for that. Conditioners are nice for the long haired pet. Combing is much easier when the coat is tangle free and the dog will be so much happier when you are not yanking and pulling a comb through his hair. He has tolerated the bath so he should not be expected to put up with having his hair pulled during the comb out.

Nail clippers are a good grooming tool to have. They come in several sizes and there are very small curved ones just for cats. Cat and dog nail are different and the tiny clippers are ideal. Let's talk a minute about the hugely advertised pedipaws. It sounds good. You cannot quick the pet. There is a little rotating wheel of sandpaper to smooth the nails, pain free. You put the nail inside the little hole and sand away. Not so fast, many pets don't like this. It takes patience and time to teach your pet to tolerate it, and I defy anyone to attempt it on any but the almost comatose cat. It is relatively quiet, but not quiet enough for the feline population. Try it if you must, but it is not as easy as the ad makes it look.

For the bath phobic pet, or just for a refresher between groomings, there are powders and wipes designed for quickie clean ups. The wipes are nice for muddy paws. My thundering herd bolts through the door at warp speed after being out in the rain, so a mop works well for me. Older pets can be kept fresh even in cold weather with a dry shampoo. Just sprinkle it on and brush through the coat, no muss, no fuss. Cats will tolerate this better than being bathed in the traditional way. Cats are usually pretty well groomed on their own, but older and overweight pets need some help keeping themselves clean. A fine comb works nicely on the rear area for those who cannot reach their posteriors after using the litter box. Wasn't that delicately put? Cat owners know exactly what I mean.

After the grooming is complete, you can buy any number of bows and frilly hair things for your pet. Please choose something manly for your male dog. There are colognes as well. What self respecting dog wants to smell like green apple? There are some unscented coat refreshers that are nice in winter, or wet weather for that "doggy" smell.

As you can see, you could spend a small fortune on grooming supplies. Just remember that a lot of them are marketed to the owner, not the dog, so choose carefully.
